On Tuesday, Sao Paulo's state department of health declared a state of emergency, estimating 300 cases for every 100,000 inhabitants. "We have six million doses this year and 50 million doses over five years," he said. Dengue is now present in 85% of Brazil's municipalities, Kfouri added, spreading into regions where it was never seen before. In some cases, the disease can cause a more severe hemorrhagic fever, resulting in bleeding that can lead to death. London CNN —Finance officials from the world’s biggest economies began talks this week on introducing a global minimum tax on billionaires. According to the EU Tax Observatory, the super-rich in big countries pay a far smaller share of their income in taxes than ordinary people. The world’s current patchwork of tax regimes fails “to properly tax the individuals with the highest ability to pay taxes,” he added. The negotiations on a minimum tax on corporations took years,” Quentin Parrinello, senior policy advisor at the EU Tax Observatory, told CNN. ‘Kill B.’ Review: Dances of Dominance

The dancer Mia Zalukar lay collapsed on the stage of NYU Skirball, seemingly exhausted after a long solo — but she wasn’t doing it quite right. This is one of many such exchanges in “Kill B.,” a 2019 work by Isakovic and Zalukar that had its United States premiere on Friday evening as part of the Queer New York International Arts Festival. Organized by the Croatian curator Zvonimir Dobrovic, the festival features artists from Croatia, Canada, Argentina, Brazil and Germany exploring “what it is to be outside of the norm,” Dobrovic said in a curtain speech. He stressed that this outsider status is contextual; it might mean one thing in post-socialist Zagreb, another in São Paulo. Inspired by Quentin Tarantino’s “Kill Bill” movies, the decidedly brief “Kill B.” doesn’t evoke the bloody violence of the films (though there are some choice references) so much as the fraught director-actress relationship at their core.

By Ana ManoSAO PAULO (Reuters) - Brazilian federal prosecutors are asking a judge to unwind a 2017 deal handing control of pulp and paper company Eldorado from Brazilian firm J&F to Paper Excellence Group, citing restrictions on foreign land ownership. In 2017, J&F Investimentos agreed to sell Eldorado Brasil Celulose to a unit of Paper Excellence at an enterprise value of 15 billion reais ($3.0 billion). Brazil imposed limitations on foreign land ownership in the early 1970s, but spotty public records have left uncertainty about how consistently those restrictions are enforced. In December, Brazil's rural land agency Incra issued a recommendation saying the deal would effectively give Paper Excellence control of 14,486 hectares of rural land owned by Eldorado. Paper Excellence said Incra's opinion was not legally binding, and a judge has not ruled on the prosecutors' motion.

Brazil Authorities Crack Down on Illegal Pesticides Trade
  + stars: | 2024-01-31 | by ( Jan. | At P.M. | ) www.usnews.com   time to read: +2 min
The parallel trade in pesticides, which would represent about 20% of the entire Brazilian market, according to a lobby group, highlights supply chain risks faced by global grain traders in farm powerhouse Brazil. Increasingly, criminals are using structures involving front companies that arrange false invoices, produce fake labels, smuggle and move the illegal products. For example, authorities tested batches of seized insecticide Thiamethoxam that showed a 95% concentration of the active ingredient, whereas the highest concentration allowed in Brazil is 50%, the PRF said. Last year, the industry welcomed a new law setting harsher penalties for those producing, storing or shipping illegal pesticides in Brazil. The new law was signed as seizures of illegal pesticides rose threefold in eight years, to 195.7 tons in 2023, according to PRF data.

SAO PAULO, Dec 4 (Reuters) - Brazilian bank Itau Unibanco (ITUB4.SA) on Monday launched a cryptocurrency trading service for clients of its investment platform, making the nation's largest lender the latest local player to enter the market for the digital asset's exchange. "It starts with bitcoin, but our overarching strategic plan is to expand to other crypto assets in the future," he said, adding any expansion would depend on how crypto regulation in the country evolved. Itau argues it will stand out from rivals as it also acts as a custodian, safeguarding users' assets, Antunes said. The move comes about a month after two local players announced they were leaving the crypto market. Brokerage and investments company XP (XP.O) did not say why it was shutting down its crypto service, but financial services firm PicPay, owned by conglomerate J&F which also controls meatpacker JBS (JBSS3.SA), cited regulatory uncertainties.
